The capacity to enter the llaqta will increase from 3,044 to 4,044 visitors per day after the approval of the proposal by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) and the Ministry of Culture of Cusco. Many visitors could not visit the citadel in June, July, and August 2022. We recommend that you book in advance!

Huayna Picchu Mountain + Circuit 4

Machu Picchu Mountain + visit 3

How to book and buy tickets to Machu Picchu?

Visit the Ministry of Culture website. Please be patient, as the site may take some time to load. You must install Adobe Flash (free download) to view the site. You can change the language to English by clicking on the UK flag on the top right.

Choose a place you want to visit. Above the calendar, you must first select a place to stay before choosing a date.

Here you have to decide if you only want to visit Machu Picchu or if you want to combine the visit with a visit to the museum. The Museo Manuel Chávez Ballon is a small museum, but well worth a visit before visiting Machu Picchu itself.

It houses some nice artifacts, all described in English. The museum is near Aguas Calientes (a town just below Machu Picchu). The next step is to choose a route. This means that you have to decide if, in addition to Machu Picchu (or Machu Picchu and the museum), you will also visit Huayna Picchu and Mount Machu Picchu.

Choose your date. Once you have chosen your route, you can select a day by clicking on the calendar.

Choose the Number of tickets you need. Click the arrows under Number to select the Number of tickets required.

Please note: if you want to buy a CHILD ticket, click on the button at the top (tick for students). Children 8 and over pay the student rate. Children 3 and under are FREE!

Fill in your data. You need to fill in your details exactly as they appear in your passport.

Complete your order. You are now on the last page. A pop-up window may appear with the mention “Read the general conditions of sale.” Enter your email address and verify that all information is correct. Remember that it must match the specified identifier.

When you’re done, click “Generate Reservation.” Several pop-up windows then appear with your booking form. It is important! Please don’t close it, because you haven’t paid for your ticket! Copy the reservation number that appears on the page. Then select the “Payment” tab in the main window at the top. This will take you to a new page.

Pay for your tickets. You must now enter your reservation code on the payment page.

Save and print your tickets. As soon as your payment is complete, print your receipt and tickets and save them to your computer in PDF format.

Aguas Calientes is the closest town to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu; once you arrive in the city, you must take a bus to get to Machu Picchu, so make sure you buy your bus ticket to Machu Picchu well in advance.

There is only one company that sells bus tickets, this company is called Consettur, so there is a monopoly which is why the prices are not low, considering that the stretch is very short, an approximate 20 to 25 minutes by bus, this is the reason why many tourists prefer and climb the mountain on foot, this hike is also 100% possible, it takes about 1 hour.

If you are considering buying the bus tickets, we suggest you buy them in Cusco city, as Consettur also has a couple of offices where you can purchase the entrance tickets; you must bring your passport and pay the fare in US Dollars.

If you forgot to buy your bus ticket in Cusco, you could buy it in the city of Aguas Calientes; however, sometimes there are a lot of people waiting in line, which can affect your scheduled excursions in this location.

Every 5 to 10 minutes, a bus leaves from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu; the same happens if you wish to return to Aguas Calientes from Machu Picchu.

• Buses are in operation every day from 06:00 am to 5:30 pm.

How to get from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is 9 km up the mountain from Aguas Calientes. There are only two ways to get to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes: by bus or on foot.

Bus from AGUAS CALIENTES to MACHU PICCHU

Buses operated by Consettur Machupicchu transport passengers between Aguas Calientes and the main gate of the ruins. The route follows a winding and steep road called Carretera Hiram Bingham. Buses depart from the bus stop on Av. Hermanos Ayar in Aguas Calientes departs from 5:30 AM to 2:30 PM as soon as the bus is full or every 15 minutes. In general, the bus ride takes 25 minutes. The last bus from the ruins back to town is at 5:30 PM.

Hike from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu

It’s a steep climb along the river and mountain to the entrance to Machu Picchu. You can hike the 7 km (4.5 miles) following the dirt road or take the more vertical route, “The Inca Trail from the Puente Ruinas to Machu Picchu.”

What are the extra hikes around Machu Picchu Park?

A visit to Machu Picchu is not a visit to a specific place. There are other places to hike for visitors with a bit of a thirst for the extra discovery kilometers.

Huayna picchu Hike

Trekkers usually take 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the summit. Athletes can reach the top in 45 minutes. Getting off is about the same time, so it would be good to walk for 3 hours with plenty of time.
