Sacred Valley Tour from Ollantaytambo
At 09 in the morning, our tour guide plus the driver of the vehicle goes from the city of Cusco to the town of Ollantaytambo to start the guided tour, beginning the excursion with the ruins of Ollantaytambo. Ollantaytambo is one of the greatest architectural expressions of the Incas for being built on a high hill that dominates three fertile valleys; Ollantaytambo is like the focal point of the valleys for the control of people, animals, and grains that were transported to Machu Picchu, the rest of the Sacred Valley and the city of Cusco.
Continue exploring the Sacred Valley Tour from Ollantaytambo to the circular ruins of Moray; Moray contains 04 circular ruins, one of which looks like a gigantic amphitheater sunken inside the earth. In the rainy season, the circular terraces of Moray do not fill with water because they have a system of massive drainage channels that are lost within the earth; It is a feat of the ancient Inca constructions.
Then, we head towards the salt mines of Maras to observe the Salinas in its fullness; It is impressive that the population of Maras continues with the ancestral and traditional process of salt production to prepare delicious meals in the time of the Incas and today. To conclude the Sacred Valley Tour from Ollantaytambo, we will visit the ruins of Chinchero with its textile center of unique ancestral techniques. How to get to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo?
There are only a couple of ways to get to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo; either you walk the Inca Trail for two days, or you cross the Sacred Valley of the Incas, in one of the most incredible short train rides in the world, to Aguas Calientes Machu Picchu (town). The trip requires excellent organization; you can go on your own, although you may prefer that we take care of your entire trip.
How to go by train to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo?
The simplest way to get to Machu Picchu; is to go by train or walk for two days through the Inca Trail. The train to Machu Picchu departs from Ollantaytambo (1 hour and 40 minutes approx. Cusco-Ollantaytambo by car) or Poroy (30 minutes Cusco-Poroy approx. by car), following the course of the Urubamba River through the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas. You can buy train tickets from Peru Rail or Inca Rail companies; each has different services, from economic to luxury services, on board.
When is the best time to go to the Sacred Valley from Ollantaytambo?
The best time to visit the Sacred Valley depends on your priority. The low travel season between September and April is the best when there are few people. For the best weather, the dry season between May and August brings the clearest skies, and more people visit.
The season is not a problem in the Sacred Valley, with minimum temperatures between 6 ºC and maximum temperatures around 24 ºC. We recommend that you always carry a raincoat, as the geography of Machu Picchu means that rain can fall any time of the year.
However, there are significant differences between coming in the rainy season or during the dry season; if you do not want to get wet, you can choose to go between April and October, the dry season, but coming in the rainy season also has its advantages, lower prices, fewer people and the Sacred Valley in its most intense green.
Travel Guide
OLLANTAYTAMBO
The archaeological site shows the extraordinary megalithic architecture and a unique urban planning system. Visit the massive Temple of the Sun, the water temple, and the granaries built on the hillsides. But, the town is also worth a visit because it is known as the last living Inca city.
SALT MINES
The Salt Mines are controlled by the Andean communities of Maras and Pichingoto; however, the origin comes from pre-Inca times. This beautiful natural attraction shows more than 4000 salt mines thanks to the saltwater spring. This is one of the few places in Peru where the locals manually extract white, pink, and brown salt!
MORAY
The Incas built these circular terraced depressions to acclimatize a variety of crops. In other words, they were used as a greenhouse in modern times. Moreover, this could only happen thanks to the temperature differences created by the sun and the wind.
CHINCHERO
A typical Inca village surrounded by colorful fields of potatoes, beans, and quinoa. This place lets you know about the Inca site, the colonial church, and the weaving demonstration process.
