Travel Guide
ARCHAEOLOGICAL CENTER OF HUCHUY QOSQO – HIDDEN WONDER
This Inca beauty has peculiar architecture; the buildings have been built on a polished stone base; it has a fine finish with clay plaster (these are the best-preserved parts), and the highest floors are made of adobe.
You can appreciate a “Kallanka,” a rectangular room that measures approximately 40 to 50 meters long; these were state centers of great importance where Inca officials stayed. In the same way, a remarkable building with two stone floors and an upper floor of adobe. Also, we find large terraces, a vast square, and a large Inca gate, which passes a well-preserved road.
According to chroniclers, the Inca Wiracocha ordered the construction of the Archaeological Center of Huchuy Qosqo. Probably in his old age, he was tired and wished to leave the government, away from the hustle and bustle of the capital of the Empire of Tahuantinsuyo (Cusco). He then sought peace and tranquility in this place.
The Archaeological Center of Huchuy Qosqo is built on a territory occupied by several human settlements, which, over time, would be dominated and incorporated into the empire of the Incas. One of these settlements must have been precisely on Huchuy Qosqo.
What is Huchuy Qosqo
Huchuy Qosqo refers to the Inca archaeological site built in the early 15th century as the Inca Viracocha’s royal residence. It also refers to the three days and two nights trekking route that crosses the Inca site and ends in the Inca city of Machu Picchu. Not many tourists are encouraged to visit this site, which is one of the most important in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Meaning of the name Huchuy Qosqo
The word Huchuy Qosqo or Huch’uy Qosqo comes from a compound Quechua word (the language of the Incas and many of the current Andean peoples) which means ‘Little Cusco.’ In Inca times, this citadel was known as ‘Qaqyaqawana,’ which means ‘place where the thunder is seen.
Location and altitude of Huchuy Qosqo
Huchuy Qosqo is located 50 kilometers north of the city of Cusco (Peru), in the mountains of Lamay, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. It is located 3,600 meters above sea level (11,811 feet altitude).
