DAY 1

Horseback Riding Rainbow Mountain Peru

The Rainbow Mountain on Horseback adventure begins with the pick-up service from the hotel and starts the trip at 05:00 in the morning towards the southwest of the city of Cusco.

During the journey, we will pass through several towns such as Saylla, Tipon, Oropesa, and Urcos; in the village of Cusipata, we turn left to take a dirt road to gradually ascend towards the heights of the Andes south of Cusco until we reach the vehicle parking area.

We start the Rainbow Mountain Horseback adventure from the vehicle parking lot or Llaqtoc, riding the horses for about 55 minutes until we reach the vicinity of the mountain pass; the last way to get to the top of the rainbow mountain is to walk to about 20 minutes “horses are prohibited from climbing to the top of the rainbow mountain because there are steps and it is too steep, so visitors will have to walk about 20 minutes slowly until you reach the top of the rainbow mountain.”

Enjoy the spectacular views of the Rainbow Mountain landscape in all its glory; we also find the panoramic view of the Ausangate glacier that is in front of the rainbow mountain; therefore, we recommend that visitors bring all of their cold weather gear because the weather is frigid at the top of Rainbow Mountain.

After the experience of observing the beautiful mountains, we descend the Mountain walking for about 12 minutes until we reach the horse sector. We ride our horses back to the parking lot, enjoying exceptional views of the Ausangate mountain range and the Rainbow Mountain valley.

Going to the Rainbow Mountain Peru Horseback Riding is one of the best decisions to save energy and reach the top in optimal conditions to continue the trip through Machu Picchu or explore other tourist circuits in the Cusco region.

There is a rainbow mountain about 100 kilometers southeast of Cusco, Peru. It is The Rainbow Mountain, also known as Vinicunca or Rainbow. The mountain is located in the Cordillera del Vilcanota at 5,200 meters above sea level in the district of Pitumarca.

Travel Guide

The Vinicunca Mountain, better known as the Mountain of Colors or the Rainbow Mountain, is one of the most impressive mountains of the Apu Ausangate. This remarkable mountain is currently Peru’s second most visited tourist destination, after Machu Picchu.

The Mountain of Colors, due to the minerals present in its soil and the erosion of the sedimentary stones of its hills and slopes, presents the shades of the rainbow. And for this reason, despite its recent promotion, the magical Seven Colors Mountain has become one of the most visited tourist destinations in Peru and South America. For this reason, more and more intrepid travelers are reaching the summit of this sacred mountain of the Incas.

Thousands of travelers from all over the world visit it every day to appreciate its magical rainbow-like colors or to observe the most impressive mountains of the Cusco region. From the top of this mountain, you can keep the incredibly high Andean landscapes of the snow-capped Ausangate and the Red Valley. If your next trip to the city of Cusco does not include the Colored Mountain in your travel itinerary, your trip to the city of Cusco will not be complete.

Location of the Rainbow Mountain

The Rainbow Mountain or Vinicunca is located in the Vilcanota mountain range, near the snow-capped Ausangate, between the districts of Cusipata and Pitumarca, provinces of Quispicanchi and Canchis, Cusco region, southern Peru.

  • The pink color is due to the red clay, fangolites (mud), and arilites (sand).
  • The whitish color is due to the quartz sandstone, which is rich in calcium carbonate.
  • Red is composed of claystone (iron) and clays belonging to the Upper Tertiary.
  • The green is due to the compound of phyllites and clays rich in ferromagnesian.
  • The earthy brown is a product of fanglomerate composed of magnesium-bearing rock belonging to the Quaternary era.
  • And the mustard yellow color is due to the presence of calcareous sandstones rich in sulfide minerals.
