Is Cusco safe?
Of course, it is, don’t worry, but as in any city, you always have to be careful.
Is Cusco cheap?
Everything you find near the Plaza de Armas and the neighborhood of San Blas is not cheap. However, the rest of the historic center has comfortable prices for lodging and food.
Do I have to book my accommodation in advance?
No, there are many places to stay for all tastes, but always check the reviews.
Should I book my tours in advance?
It will depend a lot on what kind of tour; for example, visiting Huayna Picchu mountain, you have to do it well in advance because the tickets are sold out; the same happens for the Inca Trail trekking.

When is the worst time to travel to Cusco?
No, you can visit any day of the year.
Where to stay in Cusco?
There are many options; we recommend staying in the historic center or the district of Wanchaq.
Travel Guide
FAQ´s Machu Picchu Tour 5 Days
The altitude of the city of Cusco
At 3,339 masl, Cusco is one of the highest departments in Peru. While some people are lucky not to suffer any symptoms, many travelers tend to suffer discomfort, such as headaches, dizziness, and restless sleep during the first few days. To avoid this discomfort, try to acclimatize gradually to the altitude.
Plan your trip according to the climate
Cusco has two seasons: dry and wet. During the latter, torrential rains are pretty standard, so some activities cannot be carried out for safety reasons. For this same reason, there are usually fewer tourists, and travel agencies offer pretty attractive discounts. If you are not planning on trekking, hiking, or other adventure sports, this may be the best time to visit the city of the Incas!
Wear the right clothes
Cusco is located in a country with such diverse geography, with desert and mountainous climates and tropical rainforests. This makes it essential to have the proper footwear and clothing for a pleasant stay.
Remember that even if you visit during the dry season, there is a chance of rain. Therefore, it is essential to pack a waterproof jacket and thermal clothing to combat the night chill.
If you’re touring the mountains, you’ll also want to pack some basics, such as:
- Long-sleeved shirts
- Waterproof pants
- Gloves and hats
- Thermal underwear
- Comfortable, waterproof shoes
Implement your backpack in an intelligent way
As mentioned in the previous point, the items you should pack depend on the time of year and the areas you plan to visit. For example, the packing list for a trip to Salkantay or another snow-capped mountain should include items like trekking shoes, basic toiletries, and a small first aid kit.
In any case, you’ll want to pack light and pack everything you need. This way, you won’t have to worry about exceeding the size or weight restrictions set by Peruvian airlines.
When packing your bags, be sure to fill in the following essential items for visiting Cusco:
- A small backpack
- Sunscreen
- Insect repellent
- Sunglasses
- A reusable water bottle
Another detail to consider when packing your luggage is that electrical outlets in Peru are type A and C. You may need to bring a universal power adapter to charge your electronic devices or use hot appliances such as hair dryers.
Book your entrance ticket to Machu Picchu in advance
Thousands of people travel to Cusco to visit one of the seven wonders of the modern world: Machu Picchu. However, seeing this historic sanctuary is not so easy. Being a destination with high tourist demand, entrance tickets are usually sold out in the blink of an eye. In this sense, booking train tickets and tickets to the citadel weeks or months in advance is best.
If you prefer to tour Machu Picchu with Andean Wings, you won’t have to worry about this detail! We will take care of the tickets, transportation, and guide so that you can enjoy your trip to the fullest.
Bring your credit cards and cash.
Many restaurants and hotels accept dollars, credit, and debit cards. However, it is also advisable to carry soles in coins and bills. This will be useful for buying souvenirs at the local fairs, a snack at the markets, or tipping the guides. Remember that you can change your money into soles at the exchange houses near the Plaza de Armas.
So much for our tips for traveling to Cusco! Please consider the recommendations in this article to make your stay in this beautiful department pleasant and memorable; we hope you found this information valuable and exciting!
At Andean Wings, we offer you the best rooms, tour packages, and amenities, such as a restaurant, to make your stay in Cusco the best experience. Contact us and stay with us during your trip to the city of the Incas.
