Aguas Calientes is the closest town to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu; once you arrive in the city, you must take a bus to get to Machu Picchu, so make sure you buy your bus ticket to Machu Picchu well in advance.

There is only one company that sells bus tickets, this company is called Consettur, so there is a monopoly which is why the prices are not low, considering that the stretch is very short, an approximate 20 to 25 minutes by bus, this is the reason why many tourists prefer and climb the mountain on foot, this hike is also 100% possible, it takes about 1 hour.

If you are considering buying the bus tickets, we suggest you buy them in Cusco city, as Consettur also has a couple of offices where you can purchase the entrance tickets; you must bring your passport and pay the fare in US Dollars.

If you forgot to buy your bus ticket in Cusco, you could buy it in the city of Aguas Calientes; however, sometimes there are a lot of people waiting in line, which can affect your scheduled excursions in this location.

Every 5 to 10 minutes, a bus leaves from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu; the same happens if you wish to return to Aguas Calientes from Machu Picchu.

Note:

There is no fixed schedule for the use of bus tickets. Buses leave every 5 to 10 minutes. The visitor can take any of them.

The buses to Machu Picchu are environmentally friendly, have air conditioning, and are the only vehicles authorized to travel on the Hiram Bingham Highway; prices vary according to nationality, age, and other reasons.

  • Peruvian adult – 8 USD – one way
  • Peruvian student (between 12 and 17 years old with student ID certified by SUNEDU) – 10 USD – round trip
  • Peruvian student (between 12 and 17 years old with student ID certified by SUNEDU) – 6 USD – one-way or round trip
  • Peruvian child (5 and 11 years old) – 8 USD – round trip
  • Peruvian Child (5 and 11 years old) – 5 USD – one way
